Privacy Policy

Smart Layouts is built to keep your data on your Mac. This policy explains the little that does leave it, what this website collects, and how to exercise your rights.

Last updated: 20 September 2026

Who is responsible for your data

Smart Layouts is developed and operated by an independent individual developer (referred to as “we”, “us” or “the developer”), who is the data controller for the personal data described in this policy. No company or legal entity stands behind Smart Layouts.

For any privacy question, including requests to exercise your rights, write to [email protected]. We answer privacy requests within 30 days at the latest.

Short summary

  • The Smart Layouts macOS app keeps your layouts, settings and usage data on your device. It contains no telemetry and no analytics.
  • The app contacts our server only to check for updates and, if you bought a license, to activate and verify that license.
  • This website uses Google Analytics, but only after you agree to it in the cookie banner. If you decline, the analytics script is never loaded.
  • Purchases are handled by Lemon Squeezy as merchant of record. We never see or store your card details.
  • We do not sell your personal data, we do not use it for advertising, and we do not profile you.

Data processed by the macOS app

Your zone layouts, keyboard shortcuts, window rules and app preferences are stored locally on your Mac. They are never uploaded to us and we have no way to read them.

The app makes two kinds of network requests:

  • Update check. The app downloads a small version file from smartlayouts.app to find out whether a newer release exists. Like any web request, this reaches our hosting provider together with your IP address, the requested file, the time of the request and your user agent.
  • License activation. If you bought a license, the app sends your license key and a device identifier derived from your Mac so we can confirm the key is valid and count how many devices use it. This is how the device limit of your license is enforced.

The app requires macOS Accessibility permission to move and resize windows. That permission is granted by you in macOS System Settings, is used only to position windows, and produces no data that leaves your Mac.

Data processed by this website

  • Server logs. Our hosting provider records standard request data (IP address, user agent, requested URL, timestamp) to deliver the site and protect it from abuse.
  • Analytics. With your consent we load Google Analytics 4, which sets cookies and collects a truncated IP address, approximate location (country or region), device and browser information, the pages you visit, and the buttons and downloads you click. It is used to understand which pages and features people find useful.
  • Consent choice. Your answer to the cookie banner is stored in your browser’s local storage under the key sl-cookie-consent. It never leaves your browser and is not personal data we can read.

To change your mind later, clear your browser’s site data for smartlayouts.app; the banner will appear again on your next visit.

Purchases and support

Payments are processed by Lemon Squeezy, which acts as merchant of record for every Smart Layouts sale. Lemon Squeezy collects your payment details, billing country and email address, handles tax, and sends you the license key and receipt. We receive only the order data we need to issue and support your license (email address, order identifier, license key, country for tax purposes) and never your card number. See the Lemon Squeezy privacy policy.

If you email support, we process your email address and whatever you write to us for as long as needed to resolve your request and to keep a record of the conversation.

Legal bases for processing (GDPR Art. 6)

  • Performance of a contract — license activation and verification, delivering your license key, handling refunds and support requests.
  • Consent — Google Analytics and the cookies it sets. You may withdraw consent at any time, with effect for the future.
  • Legitimate interest — server logs and update checks, to keep the site and the app working and secure.
  • Legal obligation — keeping accounting and tax records of sales for the period required by law.

How long we keep data

  • Server logs: up to 12 months, then deleted or anonymised.
  • Analytics data: up to 14 months in Google Analytics, then deleted automatically.
  • License and order records: for the lifetime of the license and for as long as tax and accounting law requires afterwards.
  • Support emails: up to 24 months after the request is closed.

Who else processes your data

We share personal data only with service providers that help us run Smart Layouts, and only to the extent they need it:

  • Lemon Squeezy — payments, tax, invoicing, license key delivery (merchant of record).
  • Google Ireland Limited — Google Analytics, only with your consent.
  • Our hosting and email providers — serving the website, downloads and support mail.

We do not sell personal data and we do not disclose it to anyone else unless the law requires it.

International transfers

Some of these providers are based in, or store data in, the United States. Where data leaves the European Economic Area, the transfer relies on the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses or on an adequacy decision such as the EU–US Data Privacy Framework. You can ask us for details of the safeguards that apply.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right to access your personal data, to have it corrected or erased, to restrict or object to its processing, to receive it in a portable format, and to withdraw any consent you have given. To use any of these rights, email [email protected].

If you believe we handle your data unlawfully, you may lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority. In the Czech Republic this is the Office for Personal Data Protection (Úřad pro ochranu osobních údajů), uoou.cz.

Children

Smart Layouts is not directed at children under 16 and we do not knowingly collect their personal data. If you believe a child has sent us personal data, contact us and we will delete it.

Security

We keep the amount of personal data we hold to a minimum, serve the website and all downloads over HTTPS, and limit access to order and license records to the developer. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy when the product or the services behind it change. The date at the top of this page always shows the current version. Material changes will be announced on this page before they take effect.
